Media and democracy walk hand in hand, yet states with weak democratic credentials often try to curb freedom of expression by regulating the media. This report maps the legal landscape for media in Pakistan, from the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) and its guidelines to the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act, 2016 (PECA) and the Removal and Blocking of Unlawful Online Content Rules, 2021.
It also offers a comparative regional analysis of Pakistan, India and Bangladesh.
